Imagine sipping a smooth glass of Malbec, relaxing in the warm evening heat, watching the cosmopolitan buzz of the city beneath you, and listening to a raw acoustic Tracy Chapmen cover. This really is the best rooftop bar in the world.
Every time I’m in a new city, one of the first things I do is google ‘rooftop bars nearby’. Usually they end up being wanky, overpriced and I leave immediately, disappointed. Not this one.
I found this helipad rooftop bar 2 years ago, and even now I can’t stop thinking about it. And I’ve have had my fair share of rooftop bars. But this one is like no other I’ve ever experienced.
The Heli Lounge, Kuala Lumpur
I didn’t plan to go to Kuala Lumpur – it was dictated to us by Skyscanner. My friend and I were off to Bali, so we booked the cheapest flight. This meant flying Malaysian Airlines (hurrah 😟), with an overnight stop off in Kuala Lumpur.
Luckily one of my friend’s mum’s lives there, so he said: the one place you have to go to in Kuala Lumpur is the helipad bar.
So off we trot, with the Heli Lounge plugged into google maps.
Our phones took us to a pitch black street, with a dark and derelict looking building ahead. We considered turning round, but we didn’t know anywhere else to go, so tried the doors. They actually opened. There was a lift staring straight at us. We walked in, pressed the button for the top floor and headed up to the 37th floor.
We had no idea if we were in the right place. Then we were hit with this…
I genuinely don’t understand how this place doesn’t win all the awards for being the pinnacle of all rooftop bars. I mean…
- It’s a bar ON a helipad
- There aren’t even any barriers – possibly a little dangerous, although it gives this incredible feeling of liberation (please don’t jump though)
- And it overlooks the whole of Kuala Lumpur, with the Petronas Towers lurking, lit up in the vicinity.
It was two years ago that I went, and I’ve not found anything that matches it since. I’ve been continually looking, so if anyone has a different best rooftop in the world, please let me know 🙏
